Biographical / Historical

Indian Industrial School at Carlisle, PA

Founded in 1879 by Captain Richard Pratt, a federally supported vocational school, enrolled students from 10-25 years of age. Pratt wanted to reform Native Americans by integrating them into white society. When children arrived, their long hair was shorn and their Indian garb exchanged for uniforms.

In summer, many spent time on the farms of Bucks and Montgomery County. Many received no pay for their labor and were even beaten, others formed life-long friendshups with the farm families.
