Biographical / Historical

George Washington Mackenzie Ivins was born February 22, 1917 in Somerton, PA. He grew up in a one-room school house in Feasterville, Lower Southampton, helping his cousins on the farm. At the age of 15 he began working at his father's auto shop, "Somerton Auto Service," where he would pump gas, fix flats and take the train to Detroit and drive new Essex and Hudson cars back to the lot.

He graduated from Lower Moreland High School and continued to work with his father. He joined the Pennsylvania National Guard and also began night classes at Ryder College in New Jersey.

George met his wife, Jeanne, while at a roller skating rink. They were married on September 19, 1942. Soon after he was called to report for his military physical in Philadelphia. In March of 1943 George was drafted into the U.S. Army and was sent for Basic Training for the Army Air Corps in St. Petersburg, Florida. He had gotten orders to fly B-25 bombers over the Philippines when the war against Japan ended. George continued to fly in the reserves for over 15 years out of McGuire and Willow Grove and eventually retired as an Air Force Captain.

George and Jeanne settled in Feasterville and raised their son Gary.

After the military, George worked various jobs: sheet metal layout, selling insurance, and real estate. He did take a factory job in Production Control for an Aerospace Company making a system that separates rocket stages as they move into orbit. Several years later, he started working at the Philadelphia National Bank starting at the bottom but eventually retiring as Branch Manager in 1978.

Instead of retiring he started a new job with the Bucks County Court System as a Courtroom Tip Staff for 18 years. When he finally did retire, he spent the time traveling to West Virginia, bus trips, lunches, and projects at home.

He also spent a lot of time writing: essays, poems, and children’s stories and he was always ready to share what he wrote.

George Washington Mackenzie Ivins passed away on March 11, 2011.
